Nimschu Iskudow

Nimschu Iskudow (meaning thunder and lightening in Cree) was incorporated on June 5, 2012, as a one hundred percent (100%) ownership by the community of Whapmagoostui First Nation.

Nimschu Iskudow was created to research and develop hybrid renewable energy projects in the community of Whapamgoostui. The main goals were to develop hybrid renewable energy projects with Wind, Biomass, Battery and Solar for community consumption.

It first presented the project to the Chief and Council in July of 2011 and followed a presentation to the general assembly. It received unanimous support from the people to develop a renewable energy project.

In November 2012, a Front Engineer and Design Study were conducted where it confirmed that the project is feasible.

From 2013 to 2018, discussions were held and information exchanged between Nimschu Iskudow and the Sakkuq Lanholding Corporation concerning the Project. These discussions lead the Cree and Inuit leadership to execute a Memorandum of Understanding on February 19, 2019, for the setting up of a Steering Committee having for objective to develop further the project and to favour the setting up of a formal Kuujjuarapik /Whapmagoostui partnership.

The end result of the Steering Committee’s activities lead to the incorporation, on June 12, 2020, of the Kuujjuaraapik-Whapmagoostui Renewable Energy Corporation (KWREC) which is equally owned (50%-50%) between Nimschu Iskudow Inc. and Sakkuq Landholding Corporation.

On July 8, 2020, KWREC filed a notice of intent to complete the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment which includes a joint Kuujjuarapik/Whapmagoostui communities consultation process to be completed in 2021.
